Hey everyone! I hope you are all having a great week. Someone recently asked me if I have noticed a difference in the way people treat me now in comparison to the way they used to treat me before I lost all of my weight. I would love to answer this question so that everyone can know about this experience of mine…

Yes I have noticed big difference in the way people treat me. You see, I have always been an affable guy. As many of you know, I love to make new friends and chat with people from all walks of life. There is so much you can learn from people! When I used to go shopping at the mall I would always try to be polite and make small talk with people as I was in line or on a sales floor. I would get a chuckle or a hello if I was lucky. People can be extremely shallow this way. Most of the time I would get a shrug or one of those eyebrow raising “As if” looks.

I once went into a shoe store and wanted some help to see if they could find a certain shoe I wanted in the size that I needed.. There were two other people in the store at the time. So I waited my turn. While I was waiting, seven or so more people walked in. I wanted to make an experiment out of this experience so I kept quiet and waited to see if the salesmen would help me next. Guess who got helped last out of everyone? That’s right, Mikey boy finished last again! I guess the other people were more entitled to help because they looked a little more vibrant and athletic than me. Have you ever gone into a doctor’s office before as an overweight person? Usually you are never really taken seriously. I say this from experience. In the eyes of most doctors, you are considered a lost cause because of your weight and they will assume that they are just going to waste valuable time seeing you for your medical conditions. So they ask the quick questions direct and to the point with no small talk or smiles! If you are overweight, pay close attention to this the next time you have to go to an ER or an HMO.

Ever since I lost 164lbs, people have treated me ten thousand times better. When I make small talk, people will actually spend a pretty good deal of time chatting with me. When I walk into a store, I get help with a lot less resistance. When I go to the doctor’s office, the nurses actually smile at me and ask me how my day is going. (My current doctor has always been good to me for the record. My experiences were from other doctors in the past). Last but not least, women are actually acknowledging my existence. When I used to try talking to women as an overweight man in the past, I was not always greeted with a positive response. Now that I am thin again a girl will actually flirt with me for once! I have to admit, this part is a pretty damn cool feeling. (Hey, after being locked away in an overweight prison for ten years wouldn’t you feel the same way)? Then again part of me wonders, would these girls have ever talked to me before when I was overweight? It does make me wonder and act with caution.

So yes, there is quite a bit that changes for a person when they shed the pounds, get a makeover, and a fresh start. It’s kind of surreal actually. I guess it just takes a little time to get used to. I would like to end this article with a favor to ask of you. Please try not to be mean to overweight people. Their lives are as tough as can be already. Try not to dog or make fun of anyone for any kind of obvious insecurity they have. Trust me, they don’t need to be reminded about something that tortures them everyday. You don’t know what kind of damage you might do to someone. Try giving some encouragement instead. If any person says hi to you to make small talk, be a good neighbor and share a thought. You might make a person’s dark day turn into a bright one. You might actually hear the next funny joke you can repeat to make yourself the life of your next party! You might learn a of a true untold story about a famous event in time! Being good to others will come back to you!

Your Pal,

Mike

Yes, I know there is a difference in how you’re treated when you’ve been noticeably overweight and then not, from personal expierence.
